Bible Passages That Support the Balanced View

These verses show both sides clearly — you are already perfectly righteous in Christ and you must actively fight sin by the power of the Spirit.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 — “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
(Your identity is 100% righteous right now — this is the foundation.)
  • Romans 6:11–14 — “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body… For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
(Identity first — then the command to refuse to let sin control you.)
  • Colossians 3:1–5, 9–10 — “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above… Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust…”
(Already raised with Christ — now actively “put to death” the old behaviours.)
  • Galatians 5:16–17, 24–25 — “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh… Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
(Grace empowers you — but you must keep in step.)
  • 1 John 1:8–9 & James 5:16 — “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves… If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us… Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
(Ongoing confession and accountability are commanded for believers.)
  • Philippians 2:12–13 & Hebrews 12:14 — “Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you… Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”
(God works in you — you work it out. Holiness is non-negotiable.)

This balance — rest in Christ + actively fight sin — is what actually produces lasting change.

Specific Practical Steps That Actually Work

These are the steps recommended by biblical counselors and proven in real recovery programs (they combine brain science with Scripture):
  1. Confess honestly today — Tell God (1 John 1:9) and at least one trusted Christian (James 5:16). Hiding keeps the power alive.
  2. Install accountability software immediately — Covenant Eyes or similar (it sends reports to your accountability partner). This is the #1 practical tool used in Christian recovery.
  3. Identify your triggers and make a battle plan — Keep a simple journal for one week: When do urges hit? (stress, boredom, loneliness, certain apps, alone time?). Then replace: go for a walk, call your accountability partner, read Scripture, pray out loud.
  4. Daily “put to death” routine (Colossians 3:5) —
    • Morning: Read 1–2 of the verses above and declare your identity in Christ.
    • Throughout the day: When tempted, say out loud, “I am dead to this sin — I belong to Jesus.” Then do something else immediately.
    • Evening: Quick confession + gratitude for God’s grace.
  5. Join a biblical support group or get counselling — Isolation is the enemy. Weekly group + regular counselling gives the accountability and tools most people need for long-term victory.
  6. Pursue real intimacy — Sexual sin is often a false intimacy. Build real relationships with God (prayer, worship) and safe people (church community, marriage if applicable).
  7. Guard your eyes and environment (Job 31:1) — Remove apps, use website blockers, avoid being alone with devices at night. This is “making no provision for the flesh” (Romans 13:14).
